About Mardi Gras
Mardi Gras (or ‘Fat Tuesday’) is a Christian holiday marking the final day of feasting before Lent begins on Ash Wednesday. Celebrations begin with the Feast of the Epiphany on 6 January, before several weeks of street parades and masked balls culminating in the main carnival on Shrove Tuesday.
Mardi Gras was brought to America by French-Canadian explorers way back in 1699. New Orleans’ first official parades, floats and balls took place in 1857, before the Mardi Gras Act declared Fat Tuesday a legal Louisiana holiday in 1875.
Today, dozens of social clubs known as krewes lead spectacular themed parades in the city each year, spending thousands of dollars on creating elaborate floats and costumes. The most famous ‘super-krewes’ include the Zulus, who throw coconuts into the crowd, and the Rex Krewe, who give out collectable doubloon coins engraved with their emblem.
