What You Need to Know About the Silverstone Grand Prix

The British Grand Prix at the historic Silverstone Circuit is among the most storied races on the Formula One calendar. The Silverstone Circuit first came to life as an aerodrome. At the end of WWII, the two primary British circuits, Donington Park and Brooklands, had fallen out of racing condition. As a solution, the runways of the Silverstone aerodrome were selected as the venue for the 1948 British Grand Prix. In 1950, the first Formula One World Championship was held at Silverstone. Over the years, many modifications have been made to the track to bring it up to its current grandeur.

Silverstone’s 5.8 kilometer track is fast, and requires real bravery from the drivers. According to English driver Jenson Button, “Silverstone is a great challenge and some of the corners are the best in Formula One, particularly at the start of the lap.”

Over the years, 11 British racers have won at Silverstone: Stirling Moss, Peter Collins, Jim Clark, Jackie Stewart, James Hunt, John Watson, Nigel Mansell, Damon Hill, Johnny Herbert, David Coulthard and Lewis Hamilton.

This year, fans are expecting to see the British drivers at their best, including reigning British Grand Prix champion Lewis Hamilton and Jolyon Palmer, who is in the midst of a difficult season and is hoping to secure his future on the team with a stellar performance at Silverstone.
