About the US Open
The US Open began in 1881 as an exclusive amateur men’s tournament for the US National Lawn Tennis Association. It became an open in 1968, with professional players allowed to enter for the first time. The inaugural open was won by Arthur Ashe, the first African-American player to win a grand slam men’s singles title. In 1977, the US Tennis Association’s president spotted the Flushing Meadows complex and refurbished it for the tournament, renaming it after 39-time grand slam winner Billie Jean King.
Today, the US Open features men’s and women’s singles and doubles tournaments, as well as mixed doubles. Matches are held on four main acrylic hard courts, including the newly-refurbished Arthur Ashe Stadium, which seats over 22,500 spectators and has a retractable roof. Plenty of celebrities have attended the US Open, with the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio, Hugh Jackman, Susan Sarandon, and Beyoncé and Jay-Z spotted in the stands.
