It was opened in 2012, on a reclaimed mine site, to replace the Mingo County Airport in Williamson. Owned by the Mingo County Airport Authority, it is considered to be a general aviation facility, and is the base for 9 single engine GA aircraft. It has only one runway and does not offer any extra facilities.
