The airport was closed for three months following the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, due to how close it is to the Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay. The airport is located just over 2.3 miles north of the central business district of St. Marys, a city in Camden County, Georgia. For the operational year ending in June 2011, the airport had 4,000 aircraft operations.
