CITY GUIDE Hunter Valley

Private jet charter and flights to Hunter Valley

Just a two-hour drive from Sydney, the Hunter Valley is Australia's oldest and most successful wine region, the vines thriving on the fertile soils. With plenty of things to do, not all of them wine aligned, the Hunter Valley is popular for visitors who enjoy the picturesque outdoors and varied activities available. Experience it all, charter a private jet today.

The Hunter Valley is one of Australia's best-known wine regions and played a pioneering role in the development of Australian wine as one of the first wine regions planted in the early 19th century. Today, the Hunter Valley is particularly known for its acclaimed Semillon and enjoys a very special place in the world wine industry as a consequence. Its proximity to Sydney brings legions of wine lovers, lifestyle tourists, wedding parties and corporate conferences to the region

Unsurprisingly, many of the events, activities and attractions in the Hunter Valley are based around a love for wine and the industry. With 150 active vineyards in the area, there are plenty of opportunities to take a winery tour, enjoy a masterclass or partake in a tasting. Winner of the 'Best Tasting Experience: Hunter Valley' award for 2018 from Gourmet Traveller WINE, the Briar Ridge Vineyard offers more than just a taste of the prevailing Hunter Semillon or Shiraz. Try the Mount View Semillon or Shiraz or, for tasters looking for something a little different, Briar Ridge offers a diverse range of alternative varieties like their Fiano, Albarino or Tempranillo and have recently released the only Shiraz Verduzzo in Australia. Another stellar Cellar Door is Brokenwood, with its circular tasting pods, private tasting spaces and dining rooms with extensive views of the working winery and vineyards. The Brokenwood Graveyard Vineyard Shiraz is outstanding

One remarkable opportunity when dining in the Hunter Valley is to bring a wine sourced during the day to dinner in the evening. Several restaurants allow 'Bring Your Own' but do confirm first. Try Amanda's On The Edge Restaurant, located on the beautiful Windsor's Edge Vineyard and enjoying magnificent views over the vineyard and surrounding countryside. Alternatively, Oishii can provide an authentic Thai and Japanese choice, or the Lovedale Smokehouse Cafe offers a range of smoked and cured cold cut meats, smoked seafood, terrines, pâtés, cheeses and handmade chutneys.

The highest-rated restaurant in the area is The Muse Restaurant. Found within the Hungerford Hill winery complex, it offers a contemporary menu in an attractive glass-walled space. Another popular choice is Bistro Molines set within Carillion's Tallavera Grove winery. Offering undeniably French and seasonal fare to be enjoyed in the romantic paved courtyard. A hidden gem is EXP, a family-owned restaurant located inside the Oakvale Winery. This restaurant is all about deep flavours and texture contrasts, utilising the best of local produce.

The Hunter Valley is an iconic destination for more than just the wine. Many music concerts and festivals take place amongst the vineyards, such as Bruce Springsteen, Sting, The Eagles, Elton John and The Rolling Stones in years gone by. The annual Balloon Fiesta takes to the air from Pokolbin in October and features over twenty-five hot air balloons of all shapes, sizes and colour. Truly a spectacle!

For dedicated foodies, there is the annual Hunter Valley Wine and Food Festival, which takes place throughout May and June and displays the epicurean pleasures of this iconic food and wine destination. From vineyard tours, winemaking and cookery classes, gourmet dinners at renowned restaurants to intimate evenings beside an open fire with friends, the festival celebrates the region's delicious wines and fresh produce, including fruit, cheese, olive oil, chocolate and beef.

The Broken Back Range forms an impressive mountain backdrop to the picturesque Hunter Valley so hop on a motorcycle with Wild Ride Australia, or rent your two-wheeled, electrically assisted, pedal-powered bicycle from Sutton Estate Bicycle Hire to visit the wineries. Alternatively, float above the vineyards and enjoy panoramas of the beautiful Hunter Valley, with Balloon Aloft.

With several high-quality golf courses in the Hunter Valley, golfers are spoilt for choice. There is the Greg Norman-designed championship course at The Vintage or Cypress Lakes and Hunter Valley Golf at Pobolkin, all offering memorable golf experiences in relaxed and stunning surroundings.
