CITY GUIDE Capri

Private jet charter and flights to Capri

With cliffs rising dramatically from turquoise waters, illuminated caves and emerald-clad hills, Capri is naturally stunning and has been attracting the great and the good for hundreds of years. This small island sits majestically in the Tyrrhenian Sea, a short hop by boat from the city of Naples and just across the southern reaches of the Bay of Naples from the Sorrentine Peninsula. Follow in the footsteps of Roman emperors, members of royalty and the Hollywood A-list as you dip into boutiques, explore millennia-old ruins and take in epic vistas at almost every turn. If you arrive in Capri by boat, you’ll dock in the coastal region of Marina Grande; however, it’s unlikely you’ll hang around here for long. Capri Town is where everyone comes to see and be seen, set on a plateau in the heart of the island high above the sea. Busy with day-trippers, longer-term visitors and locals alike, the town has a lively atmosphere – especially at the height of summer. Lose a few hours sitting outside one of the cafés that line the Piazzetta; or wander along the bustling Via Vittorio Emanuele and Via Camerelle, where high-end boutiques draw fashionistas in with their world-famous labels.

There are little cultural sites within the glamorous town itself; but head out of town and you’ll find some diverting attractions. The closest of these is Certosa di San Giacomo, a charterhouse founded in the 14th Century which features some pretty cloisters around a courtyard. It houses the Diefenbach Museum, where works of art by the German painter Karl Wilheim Diefenbach are exhibited.

A little further afield are the remains of Capri’s Roman Age. The island was a favourite spot of Emperor Tiberius and you can visit the remains of a handful of the villas the murderous Roman leader built here. The best preserved, Villa Jovis, was built in a strategic location on Mount Tiberius promontory overlooking the Gulf of Naples. You can walk here from Capri Town in about an hour; it’s a bit of a climb, but the walk back is all downhill.

Just offshore in the southwest corner of the island are three towering rock formations known as Faraglioni. They make up the island’s most famous view and have graced the cover of many guidebooks and magazines. One of the most popular ways to see the rocks is from the sea and on a sunny summer’s day, the waters around the sea stacks are peppered with boats and yachts. There are some pretty good views of this spectacular stretch of coastline from the land, too. You can walk from the heart of Capri Town up to Belvedere di Punta di Cannone or head to Giardini di Augusto (the Gardens of Augustus). For a closer view, walk towards Belvedere Tragara and then down to the water at Punta Tragara, past one of Capri’s most popular restaurants, La Fontelina.

The second of the island’s two towns, Anacapri, sits on the plateau above Capri Town. From Marina Grande or Capri Town, you can take the easy way up – by car. Alternatively, if you arrive in the marina with a spring in your step you can take Le Scala Fenicia, also known as the Phoenician Steps, which were once the only connection between Anacapri and the outside world. There are just fewer than 1,000 steps and takes around two hours to complete the climb; or perhaps a little longer when allowing for the many photo stops you’ll want to make along the way.

Once you’ve reached the plateau on which the sleepy town sits, you’ll be rewarded by more spectacular island and Italian coastline views. Some day-trippers and tours do make it all the way up here; however most visitors are content to remain in the bustle of Capri Town, which gives Anacapri a more authentic and laidback vibe. The town’s most popular attractions include Villa San Michele, a beautiful former home that was built on the ruins of an ancient chapel; and a chairlift that takes you up to the peak of Mount Solaro, the highest point on Capri. Anacapri is also the gateway to the island’s most famous natural site – the Gotta Azzura or Blue Grotto. Visitors flock from all over the Neapolitan Riviera to head inside this otherworldly cave, where the water shines different shades of light blue and silver.
