Vast, ever-growing Atlanta is Georgia’s most famous city, a vibrant state capital where the Old South collides with the 21st Century. While the Downtown, Buckland and Midtown skylines are largely made up of glistening skyscrapers, there are still some historic gems to be found. Atlanta has its fair share of charming neighbourhoods such as West End, Grant Park and the Old Fourth Ward with its 19th-century architecture, as well as newer districts that built up in the early 1900s. As expected in a city of this size, there are plenty of museums, theatres and sports venues – including the Atlanta History Centre, which showcases a vast collection of Civil War memorabilia, and the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site.

Cities aside, there’s plenty to do in Georgia for those who crave the Great Outdoors. The iconic Appalachian Trail starts in the Blue Ridge Mountains and winds its way northeast for 2,200 miles. There are also 47 state parks and 13 National Park Service-run areas where adventurers can kayak, whitewater-raft, fish, cycle, hike and horse-ride. In the heartland region is the city of Augusta, known around the world as the Masters Golf Tournament venue. While it’s almost impossible to get a tee time at the Augusta National − membership is by invitation only − the state is home to over 300 clubs, making it an unforgettable destination for amateur golfers.

Visitors with a keen interest in American history will be spoilt here. Georgia played an important role in the Civil War and today there are over 400 sites to explore, including battlefields, cemeteries, forts, prisons and museums. With its celebrated Civil War exhibit, the capital’s Atlanta History Centre is a great place to start one of the Civil War driving routes. One of the city’s nearest sites is the Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield, a 3,000-acre park and the largest wilderness area in Metropolitan Atlanta, while other sights of interest include the coastal defenses of Fort McAllister and Fort Pulaski, built to protect the city of Savannah, and the National Civil War Naval Museum in Columbus.

Georgia’s 110-mile coastline may not be as well-known as the Carolinas’, but it’s just as beautiful, with sandy shores, marshes and estuaries. A series of beautiful barrier islands includes the breathtaking Cumberland Island, where wild horses freely roam along the sandy shores. The state’s coastal birthplace, Savannah, was founded by General James Oglethorpe in 1733 and is bursting with relics of the past, such as historic squares and a building that dates back to just a year after the city was established. Other highlights include Johnson Square, the Pirates’ House and Chippewa Square, the setting of the famous bus stop scenes in Forrest Gump (unfortunately, the bench is not in situ). Savannah’s historic streets also boast an incredible number of antebellum mansions.
